What is Rumble bass?
A rumble bass is the low, reverb-saturated bass layer that sits underneath the kick in techno, created by sending a kick into distorted reverb and filtering the result so it fills the low end between kick hits. It is the signature of rolling, hypnotic techno.
The classic technique: duplicate your kick, send it 100% wet into a distorted reverb (a dark plate or hall works well), cut everything above roughly 150–250 Hz, and sidechain the result to the dry kick so the rumble swells between hits instead of masking them. Saturation glues the tail into a continuous rolling texture, and subtle EQ or LFO movement keeps it evolving over eight-minute arrangements. Because the rumble often replaces a traditional bassline, its pitch content should be tuned to the key of the track.
