What is Resampling?

Resampling is recording the processed output of your DAW (or a track within it) back in as new audio, so you can edit, stretch, reverse and re-process the result as raw material — a cornerstone technique of electronic sound design.

Resampling serves two purposes. Creatively, it turns anything — a synth line drowned in effects, a drum loop through a filter sweep — into audio you can chop, pitch and mangle further, producing textures no preset contains. Practically, it commits decisions: once a part is audio, you stop tweaking the synth and start building the track, while freeing CPU. A common techno workflow is to resample entire 8-bar mixdowns and use slices of them as transitions and fills elsewhere in the arrangement.
