What is Phrasing (DJ mixing)?

Phrasing is mixing tracks so their musical sections line up — starting a transition at the beginning of a 16- or 32-bar phrase so that builds, drops and breakdowns of both tracks land together instead of colliding mid-section.

Dance music is built in phrases of 8, 16 or 32 bars, and something meaningful usually changes at each boundary. A beatmatched mix with wrong phrasing still sounds wrong: one track builds while the other breaks down. Count bars from any section change (or watch the waveform grid), start your transitions on phrase boundaries, and plan which section of the incoming track should be playing when the outgoing one peaks. Phrasing is the difference between two tracks playing simultaneously and one continuous piece of music.
