What is Mastering?

Mastering is the final processing stage of a finished stereo mix — EQ, compression, saturation and limiting applied to the whole track — to make it loud, balanced and translatable across club systems, streaming platforms and headphones.

Mastering cannot fix a bad mix; it polishes a good one. For club techno the priorities are competitive loudness (usually via clipping plus limiting), a controlled mono low end, and tonal balance checked against reference tracks. Producers should learn enough mastering to make strong-sounding demos, but many still send final releases to a dedicated engineer — fresh ears on good monitoring catch what the producer has become deaf to after a hundred listens.
