What is Groove and swing?
Groove is the rhythmic feel of a track — how its hits relate to the grid and to each other — while swing is the specific technique of delaying every second subdivision so the pattern lopes instead of marching. Together they decide whether a loop feels alive or robotic.
Perfectly quantised drums are metronomic but flat. Groove comes from micro-timing (pushing hats slightly late, pulling a clap slightly early), velocity variation, and interplay between elements answering each other across the bar. DAWs offer groove templates and swing percentages (typically 50–65% for techno), but ears beat presets: nudge individual hits and listen at loop level. Minimal and rolling techno live or die on this detail — the fewer the elements, the more each one's timing matters.
