What is Four-on-the-floor?
Four-on-the-floor is a drum pattern in which the kick drum hits on every quarter note of a 4/4 bar — the steady "boom, boom, boom, boom" pulse that underpins techno, house and most club music.
The pattern's power is its predictability: dancers always know where the beat is, and DJs can mix any two four-on-the-floor tracks phrase-aligned. The groove around it comes from what happens between the kicks — off-beat hi-hats, syncopated percussion, ghost notes and swing. In techno, virtually everything is built on this foundation; removing the kick for a breakdown and bringing it back is the genre's most reliable tension-and-release tool.
